Where creativity finds its space

Finding inspiration across borders: Where creativity finds its space

At cma, we believe creativity is the essence of the work we do. But where does this creativity come from? Well, we've come to learn it often starts from the spaces in-between, the pauses amid the crazy busyness of daily life, like travel.

Research shows a strong correlation between travel and creativity — and that’s certainly been my experience. In this article, join me as I recount some of the pinch-me moments from my recent travels, and where I found inspiration!

Singapore: Colours of inspiration

My short-lived time in Singapore left me inspired by the vibrant and colourful landscape, particularly how colour was used on colour in places like Haji Lane. The city's mix of old and new architecture and design elements blend harmoniously, showcasing that, it really is the spaces in-between that encourage us to think outside the box.

London: Embracing in-between spaces

In London, we discovered a bustling metropolis where the power of design is evident in the most unexpected places — the London Underground. The ‘Tube’ is a testament to the value of well-designed public spaces. The investment made to craft inviting and efficient in-between areas leaves an indelible mark on the daily lives of commuters, reinforcing my belief that good design can have a profound impact on people's daily experiences.

My time in London will serve as a vivid reminder of the significance of recognising and nurturing these often-overlooked in-between spaces. It’s through these subtle yet pivotal design choices that we can elevate the overall quality of life for the people who interact with them daily.

Stockholm: A designer's utopia

My journey continued in Stockholm, Sweden, where I felt like a smug designer pig in mud! We had the privilege of staying at Ett Hem, a boutique hotel that was once an old homestead, now transformed into a beautiful hotel. Staying at Ett Hem hotel was a dream of mine and I was surrounded by beautiful design at every nook and cranny.

Designed by the renowned Ilse Crawford, the hotel's interior was truly captivating with its exquisite attention to detail. The communal living spaces and kitchens were intentionally crafted to create a homely atmosphere, connecting guests on a personal level. This experience reminded us of the value of crafting spaces that resonate with people and have a sense of feeling ‘home’.

Copenhagen: Design as a way of life

Copenhagen, Denmark, is a city where design is so evidently an integral part of daily life. From sleek furniture design to minimalistic architecture and sustainable urban planning, the idea design can be both functional and aesthetic is exemplified here.

My time in Copenhagen reaffirmed my belief design is not just about creating beautiful products or spaces; it's about shaping experiences that elevate the lives of those who live and work there.

Finally, as I reminisce on my travel experience, I’m feeling refreshed and inspired. Architects are creative problem solvers. The opportunity for the creative brain to spark happens in the space in-between. From the colours of Singapore to the importance of in-between spaces in London, the design simplicity in Stockholm, and the design-centric life in Copenhagen, I have returned with new ideas and perspective.
